| UBC Science and Practice of Sustainability - August 2006 |
|
In August 2006, University of British Columbia students and instructors Dr. Kurt Grimm and Dr. Neil Meikleham visited the Iris Griffith Centre as part of The Science and Practice of Sustainablity field course. Over two days, students were introduced to the goals and programs of the Iris Griffith Centre, and the role that the Lagoon Society plays in the community. As part of their service work, the students dug two pit privies for the Centre, and discussed sustainable methods of human waste management. Students also sat in on a meeting of the Education Committee, where they were invited to contribute their thoughts and feedback. The meeting provided a fantastic opportunity for cross-fertilization of ideas. Many of the students expressed an interest in volunteering or working with the Lagoon Society on future projects. We’re looking forward to it!
The Lagoon Society is very grateful to the generous contributions of the many private individuals, businesses, foundations, community groups, corporations, and government agencies that make up our many sponsors. We gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance of the Province of British Columbia.
